Her younger brother, Ferdinand, is a piece of work: prone to fits of violent emotion, there is something unsettlingly carnal and possessive about his guarding the Duchess against remarriage. Her elder brother, a Cardinal, is a fine model of the worldly and corrupt Renaissance churchman (and not only of the Renaissance!). The Duchess herself is a strong and noble character, winsome and beautiful, and the arc she follows from admirably strong woman to tragic heroine over the course of the play is wonderfully handled. When the marriage is eventually discovered, violence erupts, and, as in Shakespeare’s tragedies, the play ends with the stage littered with bodies. Meanwhile her brothers, anxious to avoid just such a demeaning connection, forbid her to remarry. She falls in love with a man below her social class, and marries him in secret. Almost my first steps off the beaten trail in seventeenth century drama have turned up a play that seems an outright masterpiece. ![]() ![]() From the minute the two see each other, there's a hum of attraction surrounding them. So, does this mean that theoretically every could practise magic? Either I’ve missed this information or nobody ever posed that question. I liked the world where sorcerers exist but are only able to do magic if they bound daemons to them. Which turned out to be not bad at all and very magical. The word translated as government is politeuma. Two other key terms in the Politics are, in Greek, related to polis: the citizen is a politês and what is translated as constitution, regime, or citizenship is the politeia, a word also used by Aristotle to designate one particular constitution, usually translated as polity. The Politics is named after the polis (plural: poleis), the city-states of Greece. The Nicomachean Ethics ends with a transition to the Politics, setting out a program of debatable relation to what has come down to us as the Politics.
